A vape company is giving people crypto in exchange for smoking weed. Blockchain hardware manufacturer Puffpaw also produces Gudtrip, a cannabis vape pen. It is now offering its consumers a chance to earn Bitcoin while smoking weed.
A cannabis vape company has started rewarding users with cryptocurrency for smoking weed. Puffpaw, a blockchain hardware maker behind the Gudtip vape pen, now lets consumers earns Bitcion while they vape.
Cannabis users buying the vape pen can earn roughly $2 to $3 in Bitcoin via the connected mobile app. The reward system works through QR codes and NFC technology, and the website highlights it with the line, “Every hit earns crypto.”
The company has come under criticism for allegedly encouraging vaping by attracting users with a crypto reward. After the backlash, it revised the wording on its website and stated that vaping is not directly linked to earning rewards.
The Bitcoin reward is given as a loyalty bonus when users activate a new vape pen. Consumers scan a QR code or use NFC through the Gudtrip app to unlock the reward, while the company says puff tracking is only for personal usage in California.
According to Gudtrip, the virtual points earned by users are meant solely for record-keeping and hold no redeemable value. Puffpaw says the company combines cannabis, AI, and Bitcoin to develop a community-powered ecosystem. Still, reports highlighted a promotional clip in which the company stated, “Every inhale syncs with your phone and earns users Bitcoin or Gudtrip points in real time. This is the fine step toward a smarter cannabis culture.”
The marketing strategy has sparked concern among health researchers, who questioned the company’s approach. Experts warned that rewarding frequent use could encourage unhealthy behaviour and may contribute to anxiety, memory problems, and respiratory issues.
Several companies have experimented with crypto rewards over the years, including businesses linked to the cannabis industry. One example was Potcoin, a marijuana themed cryptocurrency that sponsored Dennis Rodman’s trip to North Korea in 2017. After he arrived in Pyongyang, the coin surged nearly 97 per cent to over $0.18, reaching a market value of about $40 million. However, Potcoin later crashed and lost more than 99 per cent of its value by the end of 2017.
Instead of creating its own digital currency, Gudtrip opted to reward users with Bitcoin. Still, past reports from Protos suggested the company had earlier planned a token named VAPE for user rewards. According to DL News, Puffpaw had also hinted in an X post that a future token launch was possible.
